The Silver Seal Whisky Company has unexpectedly announced the forthcoming release of a single cask Chichibu, which has been specially selected and bottled for the prestigious independent bottler. Talk of this bottling apparently began last year between the president of Silver Seal and Akuto-san respectively. 239 bottles have been drawn from cask# 659 (bourbon barrel - floor malting) and bottled at 62.4% abv. The cask was put down in 2010 and bottled this year (2014). Unfortunately, it appears this will be made available only in Japan. E Power, the importers of Silver Seal in Japan gave hints of their forthcoming edition on their Facebook page (here). As most of you know there has never been such a collaboration... until now that is. This release will be made available from the 26th of February however, it appears most of the outturn has already been accounted for.
Will you be selling this in Hankyu, Osaka? And what will this be priced at?
ReplyDeletePresumably it will be more expensive than regular Ichiro's Malt releases since Silver Seal want their cut, too, for having their name on the label?
It all depends Alan. Like every other time it depends on availability. Just remember there are only 239 bottles, and everyone would most likely be wanting it. At times even distributors find some things hard to obtain with small outturn releases - if it's gone before an order is made then its unfortunately gone. Since this is an official SS bottling perhaps a portion of that outturn will be allocated to selected places who represent them - just a speculation. I'm sure most major places may get, but again I'm only speculating. I believe it is open price. Did you mention a family member lives in Yokohama? Apparently there is a big retail establishment that way - who knows it may be around. Unfortunately I didn't get the name of the place but will be sure to let you know if I hear it.
DeleteInteresting post, Clint. Will you be able to taste this? I would be curious to have your thoughts. Silver Seal does intriguing bottlings in VERY colourful bottles. Just last weekend I looked at a 38yo Bunnahabhain at a very affordable price. An interesting company, it seems!
ReplyDeleteHi Pierre. Well, like everything else, the only way I will be able to taste this is to buy a bottle, which I'm happy to do. I don't get any perks, and besides, I don't review anything I don't own a full bottle of, well the exception being samples from either you or Brian. It all depends if I can secure a bottle myself really. Apparently the orders for this are 3 times more than the outturn. You are right in saying SS do some intriguing bottles, I'm sure this will be no different.
